Frequently Asked Questions
|
I can't format the newly created array either from RAID Toolbox or My Computer.
Answer: Check and make sure that the drives that you are looking to format appear in the 'Drives' column in RAID Toolbox. Also check to see when you create a stripe set that the stripe icon appears in the array column. If they don't try checking the drive cabling, cycling the power on the drives by turning them off for about 30 seconds and turning them back on and/or rebooting your system.
Can I change the file system from NTFS to Fat32, or vise-versa on my stripe?
Answer: You can setup storage with RAID Toolbox and format the newly created volume with RAID Toolbox or right-clicking the volume in My Computer. When you format in either of these places you can choose what file system they prefer. Therefore, if you desire to change the file system then you'll need to reformat. Reformatting the array will cause loss of data, so be sure to backup before doing so.
After formatting a newly created array a Windows dialogue box appears saying the following: "Windows 2000 has finished installing new devices. You must restart your computer before the new settings will take effect. Do you want to restart your computer now?
Answer: You do not need to restart your computer. This is a standard Windows dialogue box this does not apply to newly created RAID Toolbox arrays.
When performing a Quick Format on an array, no progress is shown in the progress bar, is anything happening?
Answer: Yes, Windows is unable to accurately display the time remaining during a quick format. The process should not take long.
Do you have to run Windows 2000 Server to use RAID Toolbox? Answer: No, RAID Toolbox works on any version of Windows 2000, including Professional and Workstation editions.
Can you mirror drives with RAID Toolbox? Answer: Yes, RAID Toolbox does allow mirroring of drives. You can even mirror an existing drive with data already on it to a new drive.
If I purchase RAID Toolbox striping edition, will I need to purchase a new version when the mirroring support is released?
Answer: No, CEI is offering a free upgrade from the striping to the mirroring version.
Should I format my array using NTFS or Fat32?
Answer: This depends on what youo need to do with the volumes. Under Windows 2000 the maximum file size and maximum partition size are as follows:
File Systems |
Max Partition Size |
Max File Size |
FAT |
4 Gig |
4 Gig |
FAT 32 |
32 Gig |
4 Gig |
NTFS |
16 Exabytes |
16 Exabytes |
Note: 16 Exabytes equals 18,446,744,073,709,551,616 bytes |
Microsoft recommends the NTFS file system because of its reliability and security advantages. While drives grow in size NTFS does not take much of a performance hit unlike FAT and FAT 32. While similar in design the FAT 32 file system is recommended over the FAT files system for use with larger drives.
I get a format error that the head drive is in use?
Answer: Try this:
- Within RAID Toolbox
Delete (destroy) the array
- In RAID Toolbox's Drive column right click one of the drives, choose the format using default settings (Quick Format) and format the drive. This wll do a quick lower level format and not a system level format.
- Do the same for the other drive or drives that are a part of you intended array.
- Reboot your PC
- Run RAID Toolbox and set up the stripe as usual. Nothing should be accessing these drives at this point other than RAID Toolbox.
The stripe/mirror icon in the array column of RAID Toolbox says, "Driver not attached?"
Answer: This error is usually due to incorrect installation of the RAID Toolbox driver. Uninstall RAID Toolbox, reboot your PC and reinstall RAID Toolbox.
After a mirror fails, what are the steps to recover and rebuild the mirror?
Answer: We've tried to make this as painless as possible. Use RAID Toolbox's 'Wizard' function under the Application pull-down menu.
